New Science Standards Adopted
Last August the State Board of Education adopted new science standards that are based on the Next Generation Science Standards. The board's decision followed a recommendation from an Iowa review team. As Board President Charlie Edwards noted at the time, the Next Generation Science Standards are known as Iowa's science standards because they have been reviewed and modified by Iowans in a comprehensive process.
The new science standards reflect our state's emphasis on giving all students the real-world knowledge and skills needed to be ready for success in college and in the workforce, regardless of the career paths they choose. The implementation plan supports that vision and describes a thoughtful, strategic process for putting the standards in place. I'm happy to say with our emphasis on STEM we are ahead of the majority of districts across the state.
