IKM-Manning Community School District

Regular Board Meeting

October 19, 2017 – 7:00 p.m.

High School Stem Best Classroom

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by Vice-President Hansen.  Directors present were Hansen, Ferneding, Maas, Reischl, Potthoff, & Meiners.  President Heller was absent.  Others in attendance were Superintendent Miller, Secretary North, Principals Whitson & Wall, and approximately 9 to 10 guests.

Motion by Ferneding, second by Maas to approve the agenda and motion carried unanimously.

Vice-President Hansen welcomed the visitors, a thank you card from the Ohde family was acknowledged, and there was no public input.

Motion by Maas, second by Reischl to approve the consent agenda (minutes from previous September 21, 2017 meeting, financial reports, bills) and motion carried unanimously.

Principal Whitson reported on Fire Safety Week activities, Fall parties coming up, Preschool to Pumpkin Patch, upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences, and upcoming FTC tournament.

Principal Wall reported on October being volunteer month for high school students and the activities they participated in – helping senior citizens with various indoor and outdoor tasks, blood drive, and helping with Special Olympics.  Wall also shared that the Special Olympic participants competed in a bowling tournament and that three of the participants advanced to the state competition.

Superintendent Miller shared the certified enrollment report and that the district was up 20.7 students for this year (due largely to the small senior class that went out and the large preschool class coming in to TK or Kindergarten).  He also shared that when comparing numbers over past years, the district was down 6 overall and looking at the future, should everything stay the same, the district would be down approximately 2 to 5 students next year.   Miller also spoke on the Board Orientation that he and Directors Reischl and Potthoff attended, the upcoming PD that would involve all staff and what fundings were available to all staff from various sources and then ended his report by informing the Board that the district received another $25,000 STEM grant for the Middle School.

Jenny Linde and LuAnn Langel gave an update on the STEM BEST FIRE program and all the offerings to the students.  They had a very impressive presentation and shared with the Board how much the program is evolving and how it will continue to evolve by partnering with businesses and community to a greater extent.  They also shared that it was the students who came up with the acronym FIRE (Finding Innovating Reasons to Excel) and using the Firefly as the logo.  The District’s STEM program was one of three districts that received the Workforce Warrior Award along with $500.00 from Iowa Workforce Development.  There will be a community open house for the STEM BEST classroom on Tuesday, October 24th from 5 to 7 p.m.

Superintendent Miller gave 4 possible options for the District’s 2018-2019 administration.  Action will be taken at the November 16th meeting.  Miller informed the Board that the date for the Board Workshop, led by IASB, will be November 30th, 6:00 p.m. in Manning and to contact Karli before November 1st if they would like to attend the Annual Convention on November 15th.

Motion by Ferneding, second by Meiners to approve bid of $4,481.79 to Independent Repair for the purchase of snow blower/lawn mower and motion carried unanimously along with the possibility of adding a brush.

Motion by Reischl, second by Meiners to approve FFA National Convention trip and motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Maas, second by Ferneding to approve card access on 4 doors to Walsh Door Security in amount of $9,705.54 and motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Ferneding, second by Meiners to approve open enrollment out for 17-18 school year to a kindergartner.  Motion carried 4-2 (Reischl and Potthoff voted nay).

It was discussed and agreed upon that all future Board meetings being held in the Manning High School, be held in the STEM BEST classroom instead of the High School Library.

There being no further business, motion by Maas, second by Ferneding to adjourn.  Motion carried unanimously and meeting adjourned at 8:26 p.m.  The next meeting will be November 16, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Irwin Elementary School Library.

Respectfully Submitted,

Sam Hansen, Board Vice-President                                                               Karli North, Board Secretary
