Continuous Learning Plan

Hello IKM-Manning Parents/Guardians, and Students:

Even though the IKM-Manning Community School District doors are closed, our school’s heart is still going. While academics are very important for our students, we don’t want this to become added stress for you and your family. There is no greater time for all of us to extend care, grace and understanding towards each other. We WILL get through this together. Based on the current Iowa Department of Education (IDOE) Guidance on what districts can and can not do, our district will continue to provide K-12th grade Voluntary Educational Enrichment Opportunities. This means the learning options are available but not mandatory for students to participate. Per the Iowa Department of Education, this option will count as instruction and no days will need to be made up.

We want to emphasize how important our continuous learning plan is for our families and students to engage in their learning as we know it is voluntary, but for example;  if your child is enrolled in a course that builds skills necessary for the success of another course, such as Algebra I and Algebra II, and your child is planning to take more rigorous math courses beyond those required, doing nothing during this time of voluntary learning could put your child at a serious disadvantage when school resumes later this spring or in the fall. This would be the same scenario for any middle school students as well as elementary. If you miss a full quarter of second grade when you come back in the fall in third grade and you have not participated in this learning opportunity you could fall behind grade-level expectations.

Continue to look for communications from the school and your child’s teachers in the upcoming days with more information about continuous learning. New information will come out each Sunday evening once this system is fully in place.

Supplementary National and State Resources: The Iowa Department of Education has put together a depository of resources for parents to aid in supporting their children at home. You can access via this link. https://educateiowa.gov/pk-12/resources-support-learning-during-covid-19

Wi-Fi: At this time wi-fi has been turned on at each school. Students and parents/guardians  can access the school’s Chromebook and Guest networks from your car by parking close to the building. We are just asking that people and students maintain good social distance when working in the parking lot.. Many cell phone companies have added, at no cost, additional data to your plan. You may want to check with your provider.

Teacher Phone Calls: It is possible a teacher may call to talk to you or your child and the number may appear as blocked, or private. Please answer these calls as teachers won’t be calling from a school district number since all are working from home.

ACT Preparation: This would be a fantastic time for students to prepare for ACT tests if they are planning to take the test in the next year. ACT. org has many free resources. The Iowa High School Association has a greatly discounted site available to all Iowa students. We will send this information to you as soon as we get the updated information.

Grab and Go Lunch Program Continues: This will continue at IKM-Manning (Manning, Irwin, and Manilla):  each Monday from 12:00-12:30. I want to thank the volunteers and cooks who have made this successful every week. Monday we served over 415 students meals.

Positive and Uplifting News: We are posting many positive and uplifting updates on Twitter @ikmmhs and on our official Facebook page @IKM-Manning Schools If you would like to share something that you and your  child/children are doing to continue learning, please send to Trevor Miller ( tmiller@ikm-manning.k12.ia.us ) and he will share it with the IKM-Manning District!

Essential Staff Only: Only essential staff are working in our buildings. Our hours are limited and may be reduced further, depending upon how this situation unfolds. The best method to get in contact with people is to send an email. Most IKM-Manning employee emails are (first initial, last name @ikm-manning..k12.ia.us) such as (tmiller@IKM-manning.k12.ia.us )
